The Issue:

Violence can have significan long lasting consequences for not only the person who experiences it, but also the person who perpetrates it, and for bystanders who observe it. The ABS's Personal Safety Survey reported that 2 in 5 people aged 18 and over have experienced violence since the age of 15.

1 in 4 teenagers aged between 15-18 reported they had engaged in a violent altercation. Adolescent’s Intentions to Engage in Criminal Activity, Dr Skrzypiec - 2016-17

Our Solutions:

1. Impact Presentation

Impact has been designed as a primary prevention program aimed at changing student's attitudes towards resorting to violence and bullying by educating them about the negative impacts of these behaviour and providing them with strategies to keep themselves and their mates safe.

Students hear first hand from Neil Davis, the father of Sam who was tragically killed as a result of a violent and unprovoked one punch assault. Sam's story provides students with an example of the characteristics of violence and the consequences that it has on victims, perpetrators, bystanders, families, friends and the broader community.

Includes: Impact Presentation
Target year levels: 8-12
Approximate run time: 50 minute presentation

2. Violence Prevention Workshop Package

This package provides the opportunity to further unpack the messages delivered in the Impact Presentation and the consequences of violence through a Values Walk and Violence Prevention Workshops. The Values Walk allows participants to think about their beliefs and how they would respond when faced with a potentially antisocial/violent situation.

Following the presentation students will break into class sized groups and work with our education facilitators to explore in greater detail the impacts of violence. They will also explore the personal and community consequences of violence, what influences this behaviour and strategies to respond.

Includes: Impact Presentation with Values Walk, class sized Violence Prevention Workshops
Target year levels: 8-12
Approximate run time: 90 minutes total - 50 minute presentation including Values Walk followed by 40 minute group workshops.

3. Leadership Workshop Package

Following the Impact Presentation students rotate through a variety of group workshops focussed on violence prevention, team building and leadership skills, providing them with an opportunity to develop confidence and positive leadership skills to assist in the navigation to adulthood.

This package has worked extremely well when integrated into Year 8 orientation camps or peer leadership training.
