Men Violence and Change: Education for Violence Prevention

(2017 - current)

In May 2017 the Sammy D Foundation partnered with Flinders University to support a study to gather information from young men about their relationships with women and other men, their mates, and their ideas about drinking, drugs, entertainment and violence. The aim of this study is to improve educational approaches to violence prevention for young men.

During 2017-18 Flinders University conducted face to face interviews with a number of young men to ascertain their views about violence and what might help to prevent this.

Combining the information gathered through these interviews, with their own extensive review of best practice programs from around the world, the project team has now drafted the 'What’s the Story' program booklet.

'What's the Story' adopts a story approach based on narrative therapy that aims to provide a set of materials that can be used to help young men critically reflect on what it means to be a man and the kind of men they would like to become.

The next stage of the project will be to trial the program in 2020.
